Be Ready Camp 2009

January 23, 2009

Montgomery – The Alabama Department of Homeland Security and the Governor’s Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives are preparing for Be Ready Camp 2009!

Be Ready Camp is held in September at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntsville. It is open to sixth-grade students. Students will spend one week studying how to respond during a disaster and why careers in disaster response are important. Following several days of hands-on learning, the students will “become” the first responders in a mock disaster. Assisted by professional first responders, the students will take the lead during this pretend emergency.

A graduation ceremony is held on the last day where students will receive certificates and pins from Alabama Homeland Security Director Jim Walker and the Governor’s Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives’ Director Sydney Hoffman. Students are then highly encouraged to take what they learned on how to “Be Ready” for a disaster and share with family, friends and their community.

Students must apply for camp through the Governor’s Office of Faith Based and Community Initiatives. Selected students will be notified prior to the end of the 2008-2009 school year. Selection qualifications have not been determined for this year but will be posted here as soon as they become available. Please keep checking. Remember, the student must be a rising sixth grader (currently a fifth grader) in order to apply.

We look forward to another successful Be Ready Camp in 2009!
